Places to see in Kashmir
From the houseboats of Srinagar to the log villages of Gurez. Altitudes, drive times, the best months and what we would do in each place.

Srinagar and Dal Lake
- Altitude
- 1,585 m
- From Srinagar
- Base city and airport
- Best time
- All year
Most trips start and end here, and the city deserves more than the single night many itineraries give it. Sleep on a houseboat, take a shikara out before the city wakes up and walk the old quarter along the Jhelum.
The Mughal gardens line the eastern shore of Dal. Shalimar was laid out by Jahangir in 1619, Nishat climbs the hill in twelve terraces, Chashme Shahi is built around a cold spring, and Pari Mahal above them has the best view of the lake.
What to see
- A shikara ride and the floating vegetable market at dawn
- A night on a heritage houseboat
- Shalimar, Nishat and Chashme Shahi gardens
- Pari Mahal at sunset
- Shah-e-Hamadan and Jamia Masjid in Downtown
- Hazratbal shrine on the northern shore
Local tip. If you want a calm night, ask for a houseboat on Nigeen Lake. The Boulevard side of Dal is livelier and closer to the shops.

Gulmarg
- Altitude
- 2,650 m
- From Srinagar
- 51 km, about 1.5 hours
- Best time
- Dec to Mar for snow, May to Sep for meadows
Gulmarg is a wide bowl of meadow surrounded by forest, with the Apharwat ridge behind it. In summer it is green and open, good for walks and pony rides. From December it becomes the best known ski resort in India.
The Gulmarg Gondola runs in two stages. The first goes to Kongdori at about 3,050 m, and the second climbs to around 3,950 m on Apharwat, where there is snow for most of the year.
What to see
- Both phases of the Gulmarg Gondola
- Skiing and snowboarding with certified instructors
- St. Mary's Church and the old golf course
- A pony trek to Alpather lake from Kongdori in summer
- Snowshoe walks to Khilanmarg in winter
Local tip. Gondola tickets sell out on busy days, so we book them online for you in advance. Phase two closes in strong wind, so we always keep a backup plan for that afternoon.

Pahalgam and the Lidder valley
- Altitude
- About 2,200 m
- From Srinagar
- 95 km, about 2.5 hours
- Best time
- April to November
Pahalgam began as a shepherds' village where the Lidder river splits in two. Today it is a small town of riverside hotels, with three side valleys that make it worth at least two nights.
Aru is 12 km upstream and is the starting point for the Tarsar Marsar trek. Betaab Valley is a broad meadow with the river running through it, and Chandanwari, 16 km away, often holds snow well into summer.
What to see
- Betaab Valley
- Aru Valley and its meadows
- Chandanwari and the snow bridge
- Walks along the Lidder river
- Trout fishing with a licence, April to September
Local tip. Private cars cannot drive to Aru, Betaab or Chandanwari. You switch to a local union taxi in Pahalgam, and we tell you the current fixed rates before you go.

Sonamarg
- Altitude
- 2,800 m
- From Srinagar
- 80 km, about 2.5 hours
- Best time
- May to October
Sonamarg is on our side of the valley. The road from Srinagar follows the Sindh river through Kangan, past our office, then climbs through Gund and Kullan to a long meadow under glaciers.
Thajiwas glacier is a short pony ride or walk from the main meadow. Further up, the road crosses Zojila pass at about 3,528 m into Ladakh, and Sonamarg is also where the Kashmir Great Lakes trek begins.
What to see
- A pony ride or walk to Thajiwas glacier
- River rafting on the Sindh
- A drive to Zojila pass, when it is open
- The start of the Kashmir Great Lakes trek
- Autumn colour along the river in October
Local tip. Leave Srinagar early. Afternoon traffic towards Zojila can be slow, and the light on Thajiwas is best before noon.

Doodhpathri
- Altitude
- About 2,700 m
- From Srinagar
- 42 km, about 1.5 hours
- Best time
- May to October
Doodhpathri means the valley of milk, after the white water of the Shaliganga river breaking over the stones. It is in Budgam district, close to Srinagar, and still has very few hotels.
That is the appeal. You get open meadows and pine forest without the crowds of Gulmarg or Pahalgam, and it is easy to do as a day trip with a picnic lunch.
What to see
- Picnics by the Shaliganga river
- Pony rides across the meadows
- Forest walks above the valley
- Shepherd camps in summer
Local tip. Food options are limited once you are up there. We pack lunch or arrange a simple meal with a local family.

Yusmarg
- Altitude
- About 2,400 m
- From Srinagar
- 47 km, about 1.5 hours
- Best time
- April to October
Yusmarg is a long meadow surrounded by pine and fir, south of Srinagar in Budgam district. The Doodh Ganga river runs below it and the Pir Panjal range sits behind.
The walk to Nilnag lake takes about an hour each way through forest. It is an easy half day, and a gentle introduction to Kashmir's quieter side.
What to see
- The walk to Nilnag lake
- The Doodh Ganga river
- Pony rides on the meadow
- Picnics away from the crowds
Local tip. Pair Yusmarg with Doodhpathri over two days for a quiet break between Srinagar and Gulmarg.

Gurez Valley
- Altitude
- About 2,400 m
- From Srinagar
- About 125 km, 5 to 6 hours
- Best time
- June to October
Gurez lies over Razdan Pass from Bandipora, close to the Line of Control. The valley is narrow and green, the houses are built from logs and the Kishanganga river runs turquoise through the middle.
Above Dawar village stands Habba Khatoon peak, named after the sixteenth-century poet queen of Kashmir. Further up is the Tulail valley, where you will see very few other visitors.
What to see
- The drive over Razdan Pass
- Dawar village and Habba Khatoon peak
- The Kishanganga river
- A day trip to Tulail
- Homestays with local families
Local tip. Indian citizens register with ID at checkpoints, which we handle. Foreign nationals need prior permission. Mobile signal is patchy, so tell family you may be offline for a day.

Kangan and the Sindh valley
- District
- Ganderbal
- From Srinagar
- 38 km, about 1 hour
- Best time
- April to October
This is home. Kangan is a small town on the Srinagar to Leh highway, and most visitors drive straight through on their way to Sonamarg. It is worth stopping for a day.
The eighth-century stone temples of Naranag are a short drive up a side valley. Above them, a two-day walk takes you to Gangbal lake below Mount Haramukh. The Sindh river runs clear and cold through the town, and it is good for rafting and trout.
What to see
- The Naranag temple complex
- The two-day trek to Gangbal and Nundkol lakes
- Rafting on the Sindh
- Trout fishing with a licence
- Manasbal lake on the way back to Srinagar
